Despite recent advances in understanding and the discovery of new treatment agents, multiple myeloma remains a terrible disease with no known long term cure. At the time the Myeloma REsearch Fund was started in 2000, patients diagnosed with active forms of the disease face a median survival time of approximately three years.  In the short time of the Fund's existence, the median survival time has increased to approximately five years from diagnosis. The Myeloma Research Fund has played a small, but important, part in this positive step forward.

The state of research in this area is very encouraging with the prospect for development of entirely new treatment approaches.  Most of those associated with the field expect big advances over the next years or even months. For those directly touched by multiple myeloma, the faster the better.
